Welcome to Hemp Marketing 101. This course and blog are based upon my experience growing hemp in rural Virginia. My name is Carrington Henderson, and I got my license to grow hemp in 2020. I first saw hemp growing in a field in White Stone, Virginia, I was on my way to my parents' home to cut the grass and a sign catches my eye, and it said something about industrial hemp, and I saw some funny looking plants, that I had never seen before.
At that time, I had never heard the term Industrial Hemp, I was familiar with the term Indian Hemp, but not Industrial Hemp. Now in this day and age you do not have to wait or ponder anything, as a friend of mine always says just google it. She gets on my nerves with that one, I said "Why do I need to ask google, when you know what I am asking because that's where you grew up" well that's another story.
I googled it and learned that Industrial Hemp and Indian Hemp were the same thing the cousin to Mary Jane, the Chronic, Wacky Weed, or the name we all know her by Marijuana.
On my way back on home I stopped by the field that I saw sign in and read the sign in its entirety. It said, "Industrial Hemp will not get you high". I was puzzled as to why the sign read that way. As I was getting back into my truck, my lightning-fast brain slowly figured out why the sign read that way. It was quite obvious, hemp looks very much like it's bad girl cousin, Marijuana. It was so funny to me that all I could think about was all of the people who were stealing the hemp plants and trying to smoke and not get high, and how mad that they would be. It would make a funny skit.
I grew up doing the Cheech & Chong era, I never smoked, never understood why marijuana was illegal, it really didn't seem to hurt anybody, I just didn't do it. Alcohol seems to me to be a lot more detrimental. That's a topic for another time.
Like I said, I never smoked; however, I always did say that if it was ever made legal that I would grow it.
That is how this journey began, I will share in these posts, how I got started and the challenges that I faced, what I learned, and how you can get started in the hemp space also.
Until next time
